Kaai Kim 고마워
Kaii Kim perfectly embodies the balance between artist and craftsman. Her academic background saw her study textile design at the renowned Central St. Martins (London), following this she returned to Seoul and began producing large scale works which were shown in Gallery Blue in 2019.
Kim’s work inadvertently addresses the ongoing debate around what is art, and what is craft – and whether there needs to be division at all. For Westerners with a deeper knowledge of artistic culture in the far-east, the words craft and art go almost hand in hand, whereas in the far-east, the intricacies and complexities of their textiles and furniture are simply the way things are.
The explicitly handmade qualities in Kim’s work showcase her talent and appreciation for the materials used; heavily woven and layered fabrics create a spectacular medley of colours and textures that frequently change and reveal new aspects to the viewer on every returning glance.
