Constance Macqueen

The work of British painter Constance Macqueen focuses on personal experiences; her daily interactions. Her paintings are always based off of her drawings, although she never aims for the final work to represent the original inspiration. This ethos is perfecty demonstrated in her recent Kunstpoor exhibition.

Macqueen approaches each painting experimentally; undergoing a series of changes until clarity is formed, ensuring the painterly elements in each were kept consistently harmonious.

The use of colour is crucial in her practice. Each painting involves a muted palette, inspired by the colour schemes of the popular brand ‘Tupperware’.

“It is my intention that the materiality of each painting is noticed at first for the intricacies and subtleties within the marks, before the subject is addressed.”
